Staff and Elders
John Young, Staff Pastor
Along with Kyle Newcomer, John is one of the founding pastors of Christ our Savior Baptist Church. He is a sinner saved by grace who was raised in a loving home in Caldwell, Texas. However, it wasn’t until his college years at Texas A&M that he considered the claims of Jesus Christ for the first time. John graduated from Texas A&M in 1990, with a BA in Communication, and from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2008 with an MA in Christian Education.
Upon graduation from Texas A&M, John worked briefly on some political campaigns and served as a Legislative Aide in the Texas House of Representatives. John relocated to Houston in 1991, where he worked for the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council for 7 years before joining a national mall development company, The Mills Corporation, in 1998, as Director of Peripheral Development for Katy Mills. John also worked on mall projects in Denver, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh. John left commercial real estate in 2006 to attend seminary and was the Associate Minister of Pastoral Care at Houston’s First Baptist Church from 2006 through the summer of 2011, when he planted Covenant Church of Spring.
John is married to the love of his life, Heather, and they are blessed with three wonderful children: Caroline (2003), Graham (2005), and Turner (2008).
Kyle Newcomer, Staff Pastor
Along with John Young, Kyle is one of the founding pastors Christ Our Savior Baptist Church. He was raised in a Christian home and came to faith in Christ through the ministry of his parents and other faithful teachers at his church. He is an alumnus of Texas A&M University (2002) and Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia (2006). Before planting Christ Our Savior Baptist Church, he served as the preaching pastor of Mills Road Baptist Church and as a lay elder at New Life Baptist Church in College Station, Texas. He has been married to his best friend, Lindsay, since 2006, and they have three kids.
Jeff Berkhouse, Pastor
Jeff was born in Pennsylvania but, as the saying goes, he got to Texas as soon as he could (at the age of three) and grew up in Tyler. By God’s grace he made a sincere commitment to Christ at the age of six and experienced formative discipleship while earning a business degree at the University of Texas at Austin. Soon after graduating from college and embarking on a career in sales and training in the healthcare industry, Jeff met his future wife, Bettie, with whom he has raised four beautiful daughters!
The Lord has shaped Jeff’s worldview and his dependence on Christ alone through many experiences. The most dramatic of those were an imprisonment in Orissa, India while on a 1995 mission trip and the founding of a Christian and classical school with Bettie and two other couples in 1999. Jeff and Bettie joined Covenant Church of Spring in 2011, drawn by the vision of faithful and fruitful proclamation of the Word, life-giving discipleship, and preservation of the Biblical mandate for the local church.
Geo Haines, Pastor
Geo Haines became a member of Mills Road Baptist Church in 2011. While at Mills Road, he was mentored under the ministry of Pastor Larry Newcomer and began serving as Pastor in March of 2015. Before moving to the Cypress area, he was a member of Fellowship Community Church in Kemah where he was raised. He came to faith in Christ as a youth through the Pastoral ministry of his father and other faithful teachers there. Geo has a great love for the Word of God. He has a passion to live out the gospel and to humbly serve and disciple others by his life and through God’s Word. Geo has been married since 2002 and he and his wife have 4 children.
Larry Newcomer, Pastor
Larry Newcomer’s life and ministry is driven by a passion for the supremacy and centrality of the crucified and risen God-Man, Jesus Christ. His appetite to study and understand the Scriptures began as a senior in high school. Later he recognized that his keen interest in the Bible included the twin gift of pastor-teacher. After graduating from Tarleton State University (BA 1972) he served for 18 months as an associate pastor in Houston. In 1974 he planted Mills Road Baptist Church. Shepherding the flock of God to stand as a pillar and buttress of the truth by teaching the authoritative word of God is evidence of God's continued call on his life. Larry and his wife Karen have three faithful children, Lucas, Kyle, and Kara.
